Fall is in full force as we gear up to wrap up October, celebrate Halloween with spooky shenanigans, and venture toward November and the most wonderful time of the year: holidays, anyone? Sunny days and slightly crisp nights are ahead in Southern California, but, as we head into fall full force, it is also my favorite time of the year for beauty trends. Fashion weeks worldwide have finally wrapped, and this year, my friends, it was all about the eyes.
Lucky for you, today I have pulled together a few of my favorite beauty-trend eye looks that are all wearable in the daytime, paired with an amped-up version that is perfect for your spooky Halloween shenanigans. The best part of all of this: no purchase necessary, as you might already have all the items if you are a regular Target beauty-aisle browser like yours truly. Let’s get started!
ELECTRIC EYES
Nothing screams fashion forward this year more than a bright burst of color. Trust me, you guys: bold is beautiful this year, as color is back in a huge way. You are probably all thinking that bright color is so summer; however, this past summer season everything was low-maintenance and neutral with a hint of bronzer. So this fall, amp up your classic autumn beauty wardrobe with a brightly colored liner—yellow, teal, purple, cobalt blue, and sea-foam green all fit the bill.
FOR DAYTIME: Add a bit of sass to your daytime look by incorporating the electric-eye trend with a bright shade in a perfect winged liner. The look is very neutral with a neutral eye shadow all over the lid and a bright pop of color to the lash line. To do this gorgeous teal liner, I used e.l.f. Essentials Waterproof Eyeliner Pen in the shade Teal ($2 USD). Create your perfect winged liner and extend a bit toward the inner eye with this easy-to-use felt-tip pen liner, and top it with a bit of bright blue eye shadow for maximum staying power. For my look, I overarched the liner from the inside of the inner corner of the eye and winged it out all the way to an easy flick in the corner. Follow with two coats of your favorite mascara and whatever lipstick or gloss you please, and voila! Easy, right?
TURN IT UP FOR HALLOWEEN: To turn your look from day to night and get ready for your Halloween evening, this look is SUPER easy to achieve all while channeling your inner black swan. Start with your daytime look, and grab a NYX Jumbo Pencil in shade Milk ($4.49 USD) and trace right about the teal eyeliner from the day. Don’t worry if you aren’t perfect—it’s always blend-able. Next, take the same e.l.f. Essentials Waterproof Eyeliner Pen in Teal, and draw a reverse cat flick on the under part of the eye, pointing downward. Once you have your bottom flick, you are going to create as many little triangle flicks as you wish. (I created three to make it look like extended lashes.) Follow each line with the NYX Jumbo Pencil extending downward toward the nose. Add a little white to the inner waterline, two coats of your favorite mascara or false lashes, and a beautiful lipstick or gloss, and you are ready to party on. This look can be very casual with your favorite black skinny jeans and black V-neck, or you can go a bit dressy with your favorite LBD. It’s a win-win!
GRAPHIC EYES
This year across the runways, we saw that everyone LOVED a great graphic eye. From shapes of all sizes to simple symmetrical lines, graphics were in. To achieve this look, you can grab whatever color of your beauty wardrobe your heart pleases. Go bright or go dark and smoky—the choice is yours.
FOR DAYTIME: I tend to stick with colors that flatter my eye color—browns, bronzes, and purples are perfect for brown eyes. So I grabbed my favorite felt-tip liner and got to drawing this easy-to-create graphic eye look. First up, I matted my eye with a bit of taupe eye shadow that matched my skin tone. The e.l.f. Eye Shadow Edition 2 Palette ($6 USD) is, hands down, the best palette ever. You get a little bit of every shade of shadow you could possibly want. From greens to pinks to purples to blues—this palette ROCKS! After I gave my eyelid a pure wash of color, I grabbed the e.l.f. Essentials Waterproof Eyeliner Pen in the shade Purple ($2 USD) and started to create a simple cut crease starting at the inner corner. Following the natural shape of my eye, I took this gorgeous purple eyeliner to a very thick winged out. Once I had my cut crease completed, I took the bottom of the wing and drew a triangle on the side, coloring inside to give the cut crease a more defined winged end. I then drew a sideways square on the bottom lash line. I colored in the square and voila—an easy graphic look.
TURN IT UP FOR HALLOWEEN: In order to turn it up for Halloween, I channeled Jem and the Holograms mixed with Rainbow Brite. This look is all about fun and bright colors. To get this look, you can grab any shade combinations you wish. I chose to go very Rainbow Brite–esque and took to bright blue, purple, pink, sea-foam green, and a bit of yellow. Grabbing my new favorite e.l.f. Eye Shadow Edition 2 Palette, I started the look with the easy, graphic daytime look above and packed on the color. I started with the blend of NYX Cosmetics Jumbo Pencil in shade Milk ($4.49 USD) and a mix of yellow and soft green in the palette in the inner corner of the eye. I then followed with bright teal blue from the palette in the center of the lid (you can make the look brighter blue by mixing a bit of the white jumbo pencil). Next up, grab the purple from the palette and pack the color on top of the existing purple liner in the outer eye area, topped with a bit of bright pink fanned out in the outer corner in a pink V shape. Follow this same pattern on the top as well, then draw some simple shapes on the brow bone and pack on a hint of white from the NYX Cosmetics Jumbo Crayon. I took the look a bit further and added the same colors inside my eyebrows for a bit of extra drama. Add two coats of mascara and pair with your favorite lipstick or gloss, and you are ready to be the life of the party.
SMOKY EYES
The last look of the day is perfect for all occasions. I mean, you can never go wrong with a smoky eye! A smoky eye screams evening, it scream sass, and it overall just screams vamp. It is perfection for all times. So let’s jump right in to the last look.
FOR DAYTIME: For the daytime smoky eye, apply NYX Cosmetics Jumbo Eye Pencil in shade Black Bean ($4.49 USD) to the entire eyelid. Once applied on the entire lid, use a blending brush to smoke it out on the eye. For this smoky eye, I paired it with a gorgeous blue from the e.l.f. Eye Shadow Edition 2 Palette and packed the pigment on top of the black crayon. Use an e.l.f. Blending Brush ($1 USD) to grab a bit of the NYX Cosmetics Jumbo Eye Pencil and the blue from the e.l.f. Eye Shadow Edition 2 Palette, blending and smoking the color across the bottom lash line. Add two coats of mascara and your favorite berry-shaded lip gloss or lipstick. My personal favorite is NYX Intense Butter Gloss in shade Black Cherry Tart ($6 USD). There you have it: quick and simple smoky eyes and vintage vampy lips.
TURN IT UP FOR HALLOWEEN: We turn this look up for Halloween by adding a hint of glitter and a bit of pale purple to the mix. The look is simple; start with your daytime smoky eyes and pack on pale purple and dark purple shades from your trusted e.l.f. Baked Eye Shadow Palette in Seattle ($10 USD). I took the pale purple all the way from the top of the brow bone down to the top of the daytime smoky eye. Add a bit of the purple at the bottom waterline for a whimsically purple smoky eye. I then grabbed the NYX Cosmetics Liquid Crystal Eye Liner in shade Copper ($4.49 USD) to draw some added sparkle to this smoky eye. Lining your eyes just below your eyebrows—connecting to the bottom of the smoky eye—and adding some easy side slicks going outward by the upper lash line gives you a bit of a fairy-like feeling. I added two coats of my favorite mascara and a pair of natural false lashes to add some much-needed volume. For a bit more of a Halloween vibe on my lips, I used the same NYX Cosmetics Liquid Crystal Eye Liner to draw a straight line down the center of my lips. Easy, fun, and smoky is everything this eye look embraces. Easy peasy, right?
So there you have it: We covered graphic eyes, electric eyes, and smoky eyes—all simple looks that can be changed from day to night with minimal steps. If you’re a last-minute preparer like me, never fear—all these items are affordable and easily found at your local Target store. So which trend are you looking forward to trying?
